tteokbokki

"glutinous rice cakes coated in a harmonious blend of soy, chili, and sesame sauce with veggies"
when it happened: july 21, 2023
where it happened: dofu, bangalore, india
My friend was visiting from the US when I was in Coimbatore. We decided to take a small trip to Bangalore (just for a few days) for the fun of it. I studied in Bangalore for two years so I knew what we wanted to do and eat. Ive always been dying to try this Korean dish because Ive seen it so much in the shows so we finally went. She ordered a chicken and rice dish and I ordered Tteokbokki which is basically cylindrical rice cakes soaked in this glistening thick-ish sauce with a bunch of vegetables. It had a really good flavour profile; something different that I hadn’t tasted before. It was rather heavy because of the rice cakes. I could not finish it so we took it back home.
Memory highlights:
It was more of a catching-each-other-up-on-our-lives kind of lunch so it was good to talk about everything that was going on with her at college while I spoke about mine too. The food came soon enough and when she tasted my main dish, that was when I realised how much moving to the US lowers your spice tolerance. I would not classify that as spicy but she found it really spicy so that was one revelation that I was not ready to accept because I was moving to the US the next month. I was not looking forward to this aspect. After this, we had to walk off the calories only to go to Magnolia and eat an entire box of Trés Leches because it was exclusive in Bangalore in that one dessert place in ALL of India. That box unfortunately went straight to my friends house because we were leaving that night and it couldn’t sit in a fridge in a house with no people in it.

pro tips
  • Eat it hot/warm. Always. It tastes so much better when it’s hot.
mistakes you
could make
  • Going to the restaurant with a small appetite (I could not finish one main dish despite not eating appetizers)
  • Underestimating the spice if you have a low spice tolerance
  • Get burnt by the iron pan its sitting in
