where it happened: chama mama, new york
Few days after moving into New York, we were still exploring the city and all the cuisines this city had to offer. My sisters friend brought us to this Georgian (the country) restaurant for dinner. The famous recommendation on the menu was the Khachapuri which was essentially a truck load of cheese and bread. It was much much heavier than I anticipated but was still really good among the 5 other things we ordered. It was a starter that looked like this boat and the cheese was sitting on top of this bread boat.
Memory highlights:
The highlight was the smell that came with the dish when they brought it to our table. We thought to ourselves, if that was a starter, we don’t want to begin thinking about the sizes of the main dish portions. They placed it on the table and broke the egg into the Khachapuri in front of us and gave the egg and cheese and nice stir (which was odd to me because the egg is not cooked?) Nevertheless, we devoured it until obviously all of us got full and we couldn’t finish the cheese. It was a super heavy meal with these HUGE dumplings, a GIANT and THICK pizza but not exactly a pizza? And some chicken kebab. I know, we couldn’t get enough of the bread and cheese from just the Khachapuri. After that, we went to a comedy club to laugh it off and we happened to sit right in from of the comedian so that was a fun night. There was a rollercoaster of emotions there as well because we did end up seeing two girls walk out crying and inebriated with alcohol.
